Serbia is in mourning following the tragic collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad train station, which has resulted in at least 14 fatalities.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed the number in a statement made this Friday, also noting that five of the victims have yet to be identified. Among the deceased are eight Serbian citizens and one national from North Macedonia.

In his speech, Vučić extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and thanked the rescue teams and the community for mobilizing to donate blood. He also urged the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Through a message on social media, the president demanded “political and criminal responsibility” and assured that “the guilty will be brought to justice.”

“Today, amidst this great tragedy, we have managed to show the heart and soul of our people. All of Serbia has come to a standstill. We are all left speechless,” expressed the president.

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić had previously reported 12 deaths, while Novi Sad Mayor Milan Đurić stated that more than 30 people were injured in the accident, which occurred just before midnight (local time). The injured were taken to the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, where they are receiving medical care.

At the site of the collapse, which occurred at a glass and metal canopy covering the station’s entrance, around 80 firefighters and rescuers are working to manage the situation. The station, built in the 1960s, had recently undergone renovations and reopened on July 5. Just before the collapse, the structure had been undergoing repairs.

As a sign of mourning, the governments of Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina have declared a day of mourning for November 2, while the local government of Novi Sad has established three days of mourning in honor of the victims.

The tragedy has shocked the nation and generated calls for reflection on safety in public infrastructure.
